January at Art Matakana
From Art Matakana: To start the year off we would like to showcase some of our well established artists work. Many of you would recognise the name 'Helena Blair' if not be familiar with her work. We recently received some new works from her, paintings from her Tuscan/Provence range. Another name one may know is that of Christian Nicolson, who by his own admission is a sculptor, painter, videomaker who makes large installations in the landscape and uses photography, printmaking and other methods to capture his work'
Blair's work is vibrant & cheerful. She currently uses oil pastel & gouache on paper to create her artworks, as well as acrylic on canvas. Provence, Tuscany & the NZ landscape are her main themes.
'Inspired by nature, her vivid palette, her distinctive styles bring her paintings to life , with a selection of realism and impressionism. "Most of my work has be painted with a Painting Knife, creating textural type work. Some of my work is directly inspired by this environment, while other pieces depict my travels". I pride my self in doing different things. I act for myself but usually always like to relate to other people. I want people to get my work. I make sculptures. I do large installations in the landscape. I use photography, paint, screen printing, have a rock band and make videos. That is what I do - focus on the idea not the medium" A large range of Christian's work can be viewed on his artist page.
We also have some amazing ceramic work by John Phillips. "A few years ago I developed a new material to make large lightweight wall tiles that I found out later had advantages as a medium for art. I call it Artis Fiberclay. It feels like stone in texture and looks like terracotta except it is light and a kiln is not needed. Exploring its creative boundaries has been the foundation of a my art career. In my sculptures I use simple natural and sometimes ambiguous forms. More recently I have been using my finishing techniques on canvas and on fiberclay shapes. The discoveries I make contribute to my 3D work. I like that continual sense of moving forward and stretching my creativity" More of Johns work can be viewed on our website.

Lazarus String Quartet in Warkworth

From Lazarus String Quartet: Emma Yoon (1992), Julianne Song (1989), Lindsay McLay (1989) and Alice Gott (1990) are all graduates of the University of Canterbury and The Pettman Junior Music Academy in Christchurch, New Zealand, and started playing together in various ensembles at a young age. The quartet is currently studying at The University of Music, Drama and Media Hanover in Germany, under the tuition of Professor Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartet).
Since its official formation in 2009, the prize-winning quartet of 2010 ROSL Arts/Pettman Competition has had great success with performances throughout New Zealand, Germany, France, and Poland and across the UK. They have appeared in multiple concert series, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Budleigh Salterton Festival, Musikwoche Hitzacker, and Solec nad Wisla in Europe, as well as at the International Akaroa Summer Festival in New Zealand. Haydn: String Quartet Op 20 No 2
Beethoven: String Quartet Op 18 No 2
Brahms: String Quartet Op 51/1
The six quartets of Haydn’s Opus 20, the so-called “sun” quartets for the picture of the sun that was on the cover of the published score, mark a turning point in the genre and were the ones that made his name as “the father of the string quartet”. No 2 is the glorious C major, beginning with one of Haydn’s loveliest melodies and ending on a fun-filled fugue.
Beethoven studied with Haydn, on his arrival in Vienna in 1792, and embarked upon his own set of string quartets six years later – waiting until he was confident of being able to hold his head high beside his teacher. Published as Opus 18, no 2 is the most cheerful of the lot, in G major, brimming over with youthful energy and charm.
Finally, the programme is completed by Brahms’s first quartet, the great C minor Op 51 no 1. Brahms in his turn was overawed by the example of Beethoven, and he would work on this quartet, perfecting it, for almost 20 years. The result one of the most intense, romantic and much-loved chamber works ever composed.

NZ Guitar Quartet at Ascension Wine Estate, Warkworth

The Warkworth Music Society is presenting a concert by the New Zealand Guitar Quartet at Ascension Wine Estate, near Warkworth.
This world-class quartet was formed in 2010 and comprises Jane Curry (whose CD Morning Dance is highly recommended), Owen Moriarty, Christopher Hill and Tim Watanabe.
Anyone with an interest in the guitar, classical music - or great musical performance, regardless of genre - will not want to miss this concert.
The quartet's CD The Storm is available from the Quartet's website and an interview with Jane Curry and Owen Moriarty can be heard on Radio New Zealand's Upbeat programme.

The members have garnered acclaim as soloists on concert stages around the world and in a multitude of international guitar competitions, with each member contributing their individual strengths toward creating an exciting, dynamic and engaging ensemble.
These are programmes showcasing the best and most popular repertoire that the NZGQ have played over the past few years, from arrangements of well-known favourites by Bach and Rimsky-Korsakov, to 20th-century guitar stars Leo Brouwer from Cuba and American composer Ian Krouse. Craig Utting makes an appearance with his Onslow suite, and finally, the chameleon-like quality of the classical guitar comes out in the pieces by prolific Brazilian composer Paulo Bellinati and Afro-Cuban star Carlos Rafael Rivera.
A capacity audience of enthusiastic concert goers heard them in Matakana in 2011.

Jane Curry
Jane completed a Doctorate in Musical Arts (University of Arizona) and is head of the classical guitar department at the New Zealand School of Music. During her time in the US she studied with Scott Tennant, Bill Kanengiser, Prof. Tom Patterson, David Russell, and Sergio and Odair Assad. She has placed in several international guitar competitions, and awarded the International Arts Foundation Scholarship (NZ), Medici Scholar Award (U.S.A), and a Creative NZ Scholarship and Grant to commission composer John Psathas.
Owen Moriarty
Completing his Masters in 2003 at Massey University, Owen then headed to USC in Los Angeles. While there here he studied with James Smith, and with LA Guitar Quartet members Scott Tennant and Bill Kanengiser, with subsequent/additional tutelage from Brian Head, Martha Masters, and Pepe Romero. He has done multiple tours both nationally and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician.
Christopher Hill
Studying under Bill Bower, Christopher completed his Honours Degree at Victoria University in 2001. In 2004 he travelled to Spain to study flamenco guitar and while he was there he also gave performances in Italy and Portugal. A member of numerous groups/ensembles, Christopher is a creative composer with a keen interest in new music and (more recently) guitar building. He currently plays as a classical/flamenco guitarist and all-round versatile studio musician.
Tim Watanabe
Tim graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree from the Massey University Conservatorium of Music in Wellington, New Zealand, studying under Matthew Marshal and Gunter Herbig. He has been an active member of the Conservatorium Guitar Orchestra, and has played as a soloist in the Guitar Orchestra tours around New Zealand. Tim has also taken part in masterclasses by Jason Vieux, David Leisner, John Couch, Anthony Field, and other international
guitarists.

Northart: Recent Auckland Photography - exhibition & publication
From NorthArt and Photoforum: An exhibition of senior, mid career and emerging photographers who all have various associations with the Auckland region. Curated by Edward Hanfling and Chris Corson-Scott; in association with the Auckland Festival of Photography.

Dave Alley at Whangateau Hall, Saturday 11 May
From Jenine Abarbanel: Guitarist Dave Alley has played at Whangateau hall several times both on his own and as a member of Sanders Alley Geiling. On Saturday, 11 May, he will play solo and backed by Nat Torkington (banjo) and Jenine Abarbanel (bass). Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8:00 show. Dave Alley is a highly regarded New Zealand guitarist, singer, songwriter and percussionist. His strongly rhythmic, genre defying music is a home grown New Zealand style borrowing from roots, world, blues, rock, reggae, funk, folk and South Pacific styles. Delving into songs from three solo albums and unreleased tracks from new albums in the pipeline, Dave's one-man shows are an enlightening trip through the world of an original musician and songwriter. His solo show features three well worn Maton guitars played in standard and lap-steel slide styles with an array of odd tunings and some Celtic and Middle Eastern percussion instruments thrown in for good measure. A kick drum-like stomp box thumps down low, accentuating the solid groove. Lyrically, the songs tell of places travelled, people met and ponderings, abstract or otherwise, on humanity, life and the fine art of living it.

A Fine Line: The End of the Road
The final exhibition at A Fine Line Gallery opens on Friday 5 April at 5:30pm and runs until 5 May. I think I can safely say a big thank you to Heather and Charlie on behalf of the Mahurangi arts community, for their efforts in the last few years at A Fine Line Gallery.
From A Fine Line Gallery: When we first started A Fine Line gallery as an exhibition space in 2007 our first show was the Matakana Valley Group. They put on a brilliant exhibition where no one else had gone before and now six years later when the nature of the gallery is to change (still an art space but not an exhibition space) the group has graciously agreed to put on our last exhibition at the gallery.
“Matakana Valley … the end of the road…” features the work of Mike De Haan, Gary Horton, Mark Lewington, Louise McRae, Mark Wooller, Di Halstead, Vicki Fanning, Tabea Salewski, Lynda Harris. It opens this Friday 5th April at 5.30pm and will run through to Sunday 5th May. We would love to see everyone who has supported the gallery over these six years at the opening to celebrate the outstanding artistic talent of the artists who live on Matakana Valley Road.

From A Fine Line Gallery: When we first started A Fine Line gallery as an exhibition space in 2007 our first show was the Matakana Valley Group. They put on a brilliant exhibition where no one else had gone before and now six years later when the nature of the gallery is to change (still an art space but not an exhibition space) the group has graciously agreed to put on our last exhibition at the gallery.
“Matakana Valley … the end of the road…” features the work of Mike De Haan, Gary Horton, Mark Lewington, Louise McRae, Mark Wooller, Di Halstead, Vicki Fanning, Tabea Salewski, Lynda Harris. It opens this Friday 5th April at 5.30pm and will run through to Sunday 5th May. We would love to see everyone who has supported the gallery over these six years at the opening to celebrate the outstanding artistic talent of the artists who live on Matakana Valley Road.

A Fine Line Gallery: 12 |12 | 12 Opening
Hugh Major and Kirsty Mackenzie's exhibition opening at A Fine Line Gallery was well attended on Saturday 8th December.
The amount of time and thought that has obviously been put into this show is as staggering as the flights of imagination, technique and detail of the paintings.
This is a show well worth seeing.

A Fine Line Gallery: Hugh Major and Kirsty Mackenzie
From A Fine Line Gallery: Hugh and Kirsty have planned this exhibition over the last two years to coincide with the 12th of December 2012 – hence the name 12 | 12 | 12.
This is their second exhibition at the gallery and, along with Hugh’s striking paintings, features a number of works using the gold leaf they have both been experimenting with over the last year. Everyone welcome to the opening this Saturday 8th December from 12.00-2.00pm. Exhibition runs until Sunday 6th January.
